Do Pets Go to Heaven?

Question:

What happens to pets when they die? Are they allowed into heaven?

Respond:

In social club to respond the question we must first define heaven. According to the Catechism, heaven is a "land of supreme, definitive happiness" that involves a perfect "communion of life and love with the Trinity, with the Virgin Mary, the angels and all the blessed" (CCC 1024).

This definitive country of human happiness and communion of life and dearest presupposes the powers of rational knowledge and beloved, which animals do not take. Therefore, no non-human being beast would be able to experience "heaven" as defined.

Perhaps our pets won't exist in heaven in the sense of experiencing the Beatific Vision, but could they simply be in the "new sky and new world" (come across CCC 1043; 2 Pet. three:13; Rev. 21:i)?

We know from the natural lite of man reason that the pets we take now volition not exist in the new sky and new earth. The souls that animals have are entirely dependent on their material makeup. As such, they do not keep to be subsequently bodily decease as homo souls practise. Therefore, all animals that die before the advent of Christ's second coming volition not be in the new sky and new earth.

And there couldn't exist any sort of resurrection of these animals since resurrection presupposes a continued beingness of some sort. Fido tin can't be resurrected and brought into being from cypher at the same fourth dimension.

But to the question of whether animals in general will be in the new sky and new earth, the Church has never given any definitive educational activity on this question. Any answer provided would exist in the realm of speculative theology.

There are arguments on both sides. Those in favor contend that there is nothing intrinsic to the nature of God or animals that would prohibit God from creating new creatures and miraculously keeping them in being. Just every bit God volition preserve other fabric things from corruption, including the homo body, he could very well create new non-human animals and preserve them from abuse.

Those against the thought of non-human animals existing in the new creation fence that there will be no demand for them. The perfection in joy that humans will accept in God and one some other seems to preclude the need for the affection pets give u.s. and the demand to use animals in general for achieving sure natural goods.

The bottom line is that nosotros know for sure that whatever pets die before the advent of the new cosmos, they will not be there. But concerning the question of animals in general, that is ultimately unanswerable given the contents of divine revelation.

Hither is a slap-up commodity on this field of study written by my good friend and colleague Todd Aglialoro "The Fidoist Heresy."
